Our Detroit Research Center conducts engine-focused research and develops next-generation liquid fuels for current and future global transportation needs. Located in Detroit's Novi suburb, the center is near the nation's leading automotive manufacturers and original equipment manufacturers that help shape the future of the transportation industry.

Basic Function

Apply engineering expertise to develop and implement innovative engine and vehicle control solutions for research engines and vehicles within an experimental environment. Solve complex technical control problems having significant impact on Aramco's Transport Technology activities. Represent ASC in dealings with vendors, manufacturers & collaborators where expert controls engineering advice is required. Work on complex engineering problems, designs, projects, and reviews engineering work performed by others. May coordinate or direct work of other engineers.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Completely lead and develop control systems from concept to implementation
  • Control module selection
  • Control module I/O specification
  • Control software creation, development, and implementation as needed to demonstrate engine and vehicle technologies
  • Guide and review control software developed by team members
  • Diagnose and solve engine and vehicle performance issues that may be controls related
  • Integrate instrumentation and control systems to perform specialized test procedures and technology assessments
  • Assist researchers, engineers, and technicians with the assessment of novel engine and vehicle technologies
  • Represent Aramco in dealings with collaborators where expert controls engineering advice is required
  • Process and analyze test data and create detailed reports
  • Keep current with significant developments in the field of engine and vehicle controls
  • Undertake studies and investigations to resolve problems outside the scope of available published literature
  • Plan, schedule and provide controls work direction when required for preparation of studies, designs, processes, reports, correspondence and related data and assures the efficiency, adequacy and conformance to overall objectives of all phases of complex engineering problems
  • Formulate the basis for the resolution of problems in the controls area by analyzing and evaluating all pertinent data with respect to scope, effect on existing software, economic impact and other applicable considerations
  • Provide and manage a safe, accident-free laboratory environment
  • Follow all company safety rules in performing job duties
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor of Science degree in an Engineering or other closely related sciences discipline, plus extensive post-graduate participation in technical seminars, extension courses, and/or industrial research; preferably Master of Science degree in an Engineering or other closely related sciences discipline, plus extensive post-graduate participation in technical seminars, extension courses, and/or industrial research
  • Incumbent will normally have achieved industry recognition through activities on committees of professional societies and industry organizations such as ASME, ASTM, API, AIChE, or others
  • Twelve (12) years applicable experience, including at least five (5) years as an engineer in responsible charge of technical work in his/her main field; incumbent must be clearly recognized as an expert in his/her field
  • Must be able to communicate and comprehend accurately, clearly and concisely in English at a level required to perform the job as outlined
  • Must have a thorough knowledge of engineering practices including scientific and economic principles, calculation methods, design details, and codes, standards and specifications
  • Must possess good work habits, a strong work ethic, and be able to adhere to company work hours, policies, and standard business etiquette
  • Must have demonstrated experience with developing and implementing novel engine control systems from scratch - starting with basic I/O specification through high level application code
  • Must have demonstrated skills in understanding and debugging high level engine and vehicle system interactions
  • Must have knowledge of current state-of-the-art control solutions, including approaches used for bypass controls
  • Must have experience working with CAN/LIN/SENT and other automotive control protocols
  • Ability to work on a team and independently as needed
  • Ability to process test data and create reports
  • Ability to troubleshoot and diagnose software and hardware system level issues
  • Must have hands-on-testing experience of engines in a dynamometer lab and vehicles on the road
  • Must be proficient with INCA and ETAS software & hardware
  • Must be proficient with Simulink and automatic code generation
